Classification

Reading the classification code

Every Klassic bag prints its IS 15477:2019 type and EN 12004 class. The letters describe measured performance: C for a cementitious adhesive, 1 or 2 for adhesion strength, T for slip resistance, E for extended open time, and S1 for deformability. Higher classes suit larger, denser tiles and harsher conditions.

C1
Normal cementitious adhesive
C2
Improved cementitious adhesive — higher adhesion
T
Thixotropic — no vertical slip
E
Extended open time
S1
Deformable — absorbs substrate movement

Questions

Frequently asked questions

What do C1, C2, T, E and S1 mean on a tile adhesive bag?

They are the IS 15477:2019 and EN 12004 classification codes. C means a cementitious adhesive. C1 is normal adhesion (at least 0.5 N/mm² tensile) and C2 is improved adhesion (at least 1.0 N/mm²). T means reduced slip, so wall tiles stay in place. E means extended open time of at least 30 minutes. S1 means deformable: the cured bed can flex at least 2.5 mm to absorb substrate movement. Klassic K100 is C1T; K175 and K200 are C2T; K300 is C2TE; K400 is C2TE S1.

Which Klassic grade should I use for vitrified tiles?

Match the grade to tile size and location. For small-format ceramic or vitrified tiles up to 6 ft² in dry interior areas, use K100. For medium-format tiles up to 12 ft² indoors, including approved tile-on-tile work, use K175 or K200. For large formats, wet areas or exterior walls and floors, use K300. For all tile sizes, natural or Italian stone, and wherever added flexibility is required, use K400.

How much tile adhesive do I need per square foot?

Every Klassic grade covers 25 to 30 ft² per 20 kg bag when applied with a 6 × 6 mm notched trowel. A 300 ft² floor therefore needs roughly 10 to 12 bags. Thicker beds, which K300 and K400 allow up to 12 mm, and back-buttering of large tiles increase consumption, so order a margin.

How much water is mixed with one 20 kg bag?

Water demand is 25 ± 5% by weight of powder, which is 4 to 6 litres of clean water per 20 kg bag. Add the powder gradually to the water and mix with an electric spiral mixer until smooth and lump-free. Pot life is about one hour, so mix only what can be placed in that time.

Can Klassic adhesives be used tile-on-tile, over existing tiles?

K175, K200 and K300 are suitable for approved tile-on-tile applications. The existing tiles must be sound, firmly bonded and cleaned of dust, oil and grease before the adhesive is combed on. K100 is intended for cementitious substrates such as plaster, screed and concrete in dry interior areas.

Which Klassic grades are suitable for exterior and wet areas?

K300 (C2TE) and K400 (C2TE S1) are formulated for interior and exterior use on walls and floors, in both dry and wet areas. K100, K175 and K200 are for interior installations, and K100 is limited to dry areas.

How long before newly fixed tiles can take foot traffic?

Allow a minimum of 24 hours before foot traffic for every Klassic grade. Open time after combing is 30 ± 5 minutes and tiles remain adjustable for 15 ± 5 minutes after bedding, so position them within that window. The tensile and shear adhesion values on the datasheets are measured at 28 days, when the bed reaches full strength.

What is the shelf life of Klassic tile adhesive?

12 months from manufacture in unopened, undamaged original 20 kg bags stored in dry conditions away from direct sunlight. Do not lift or carry bags with hooks, which can puncture the packaging and let moisture in.

Are Klassic adhesives classified under IS 15477?

Yes. Each grade is classified under IS 15477:2019 (K100 Type 1, K175 and K200 Type 2, K300 Type 3, K400 Type 4) and carries the corresponding EN 12004 class, printed on the bag gusset. Pot life, open time, adhesion strength and coverage figures for every grade are published on this page.
